Energy Action: Energy performance projects of Schneider Electric sites around the globe

This blog series is about the Energy Action Program through which Schneider Electric has reduced its energy consumption by 9.2% since 2011. The blog series will focus on the energy efficiency solutions and the delivery model that were implemented in order to achieve these savings.

Update: Since I first blogged about the Energy Action Program in June 2014 we have reduced our energy consumption by 12.8% and we are also the very proud winners of a 2014 Platts Global Energy Award!

Fact: Through the Energy Action Program we’ve reduced our energy consumption by 12.8% when adjusted for weather and production conditions since January 2011
Fact: Through the Energy Action Program we’ve impacted the energy landscape and efficiency of over 300 Schneider Electric sites across the globe
Fact: To collectively reduce energy consumption at an organizational level site leadership, energy managers and employees play a key role in driving energy performance projects and behaviors locally.

Core aspects of the Energy Action Program are the energy performance projects and actions owned and driven at a site level in order to achieve energy savings on a site by site basis which, collectively, have had a massive impact on our energy efficiency as a global organization.

Let’s get practical and take a look at what some of the Schneider Electric sites around the globe have implemented and how much energy these actions have saved them over the past three years.

Energy Efficiency is in our DNA SEA Blog Post 3The Schneider Electric Wibe, Sweden site achieved energy savings of 10% between 2011 and 2014

How did they do it?

  • Replaced 26 old ventilation units with 6 new units that have a high heat recovery capability
  • Optimization and control of the zinc pot’s ventilation
  • Improved heat recovery of compressor
  • Overall control, design and optimization of the facility with a Building Management System
  • CO2, temperature and presence control
  • Variable airflow by speed controlled fans offering the ability to decrease airflow in certain parts of the facilities at dictated times (for example, outside of core office hours)
  • Installation of energy meters and connectivity to Building Management System and Struxureware Energy Operation

Schneider Electric Hyderabad, India site achieved energy savings of 6% between 2011 and 2013

How did they do it?

Lighting optimization by:

  • Replacing existing lighting with LEDs in warehouse, garden, office and shop floor
  • Adjusting lighting timings and installation of motion sensors
  • Using Conzerv cooLite
  • Reduction in idle running and load time of air compressor by adjusting the control settings and fixing air leakages
  • Sleep Mode time for all PC’s are set to 10 Minutes
  •  Usage of daylight in some of the office areas and in the shop floor
  • Organised and targeted shop floor lighting which enabled greater control. If a production area was not in use lighting in this area could be switched off.

Schneider Electric Regensburg, Germany site achieved energy savings of 13% between 2011 and 2013

How did they do it?

  • More than doubled the thermal insulation of the production hall roofing
  • Deployed an energy awareness campaign to all employees which educated about and encouraged energy-conscious behavior
  • Optimized heating systems through consistent use of night and weekend hot water temperature reduction
  • Modernization of lighting systems by reducing the switching areas, as well as using LED and dimmable lamps
  • Use of natural ventilation by opening the new roof windows and switching off of the ventilation system

Energy efficiency practices and programs need to become a part of organizational culture and day-to-day operations, which requires a contribution from all levels of the organization. We, Schneider Electric, have reduced our energy consumption by 12.8% since 2011; energy management solutions, sustainability services, energy efficiency programs, energy performance projects and education/awareness campaigns are all levers we as an organization have leveraged in order to achieve these savings.

Because energy efficiency is in our DNA.
